Mandela Day 2025: A Reflection on Service, Solar Power, and Hope

Starting the Day with purpose

Mandela Day is more than just a global call to devote 67 minutes to helping others; it is a reminder of the legacy of service, justice, and humanity that Nelson Mandela left behind. This year, I had the honour of joining the University of Johannesburg's Community Engagement team for a meaningful Mandela Day experience at the Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital.

Our day began early on campus, with volunteers expected to arrive by 8 AM. Since our team was made up of 40 volunteers and we only had a 20-seater bus, we were split into two groups. I was part of the second group. The energy and excitement were evident from we arrived, and spirits were high as we joined the first group already at the hospital.

Exploring a Place Built on Love and Healing

Before diving into our tasks, we took time to absorb the importance of the space we were in. We were in. We were given a tour of the hospital, learning about its different wards, its unique design elements, and the child-centric approach that makes the space so comforting. From walls painted with colourful characters to furniture inspired or even designed by the young patients themselves, every part of the hospital told a story of care and empowerment.

Cleaning Solar Panels: A Task with Real Impact

Our main task for the day took place on the hospital roof, where we were shown a lot of solar panels that help power the facility. In the country. In a country like South Africa, where load-shedding and energy insecurity are ongoing challenges, these panels represent sustainable hope.

Cleaning the panels wasn't just about removing dirt; it was about ensuring that this vital renewable energy could continue operating at its full potential. We were paired up for the task since the panels were quite large. I found deep meaning in this assignment; it was practical, environmentally conscious, and directly tied to supporting the children inside the hospital.

Connecting, Creating, and Celebrating

After our solar panel work, we rejoined the rest of the volunteers who were painting on the hospital's pavement. Everyone was proud to contribute in their own way, and we celebrated with some group content, photos, and videos to capture the energy of the day. We were also given food packs (including chips, a sandwich, a cold drink, and chocolate), which offered a small moment of gratitude and togetherness.

A Mandela Day to Remember

In all my years of celebrating Mandela Day, 2025 stands out as the most fulfilling and memorable. The Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital, built through the Mandela Fund, holds a special place in our country's heart, and being able to contribute even in a small way reminded me of the power of community and collective action.

This day was about more than volunteer work; it was about sustainability, learning, growth, and human connection. It taught me that service can take many forms, and each one matters.
